Maruthamalai Muruga

Lord Muruga, - Utchavamoorthy, Maruthamalai
The ancient past of the temple can be traced to the period of Sage Kachyapar's PERUR PURANAM. The origin of the temple is rooted in legendary antiquity and dates back to the age of Surapadama, the demon destroyed by Lord Subramanya referred to in SKANDAPURNAM. Evidance of existence of this temple has been found in the inscriptions of Thirumuruganathaswami Temple, Thirumurganpoondi to 12th century A.D.

According to Perurpuranam, unable to bear the agony and anguish of Soorapadama, the scourge of the gods aided by his mighty brothers, Singamukha and Tharaka, the gods approached Lord Siva and sought His succour. Lord Siva comforted the Gods that Lord Muruga would come to their rescue, root out and destroy Surapadama and his aides. The gods should hurry to the Marudhamalai Hills and await the arrival of Lord Muruga, their Saviour! Perupuranam also alludes to a king called Kusathvajan, who, it is said, was blessed with a male issue, only after worshipping Marudhamalai Muruga.

Temple Entrance - Maruthamalai

The Divine Cow Kamadhenu(Komatha) is reported to have grazed in the pastures of the hills of Marudhamalai.

Main Shrine - Maruthamalai

In the temple premises, we can find Aathimoolasthanam, Edumban temple, Kuthirai Kulampadigal, abodes of Siddhas  - Pambatti Siddhar and Pancha Vrutcham( 5 entangled divine trees).

Raja gopuram at dusk

Aathimoolasthanam

As we approach the hill top present is the prime shrine were Lord Subramanya with his two consorts, Valli and Teyvannai, enshrined in the form of linga .The first pooja is performed for these deities.

Edumaban temple

In the shrine of Idumba the image of the deity is carved on a huge round rock in the posture of carrying a Kaavadi. Married couples having no issues worship the deity and offer toy cradles with the firm faith of being blessed with progeny by the Grace of god.

Pancha Virutcham

Under the cluster of trees entangled with one another. is an Idol of Lord Ganesha - Heramba Ganapathy. The breeze wafting along the foliage has an unfailing cure for all diseases of the people. A host of saints, invisible to the common man's eyes, are supposed to dwell here doing meditation. An aged Irula tribesman, 80 years old identified the entangled trees as Korakattai, Ichi, Banyan, Vakkanai and Ottu maram and added there was one tree in the group, Peepal in the days of yore, and it is extinct now. The tribalman also said that this tree existed in the same manner even during his childhood. This is a unique phenomenon which has attracted botanists apart from devotees.

Kuthirai Kulambadiagal

Continuing our ascent, we find a beautiful mandapam, enshrining what is called 'Kudirai Kulambu' (hoof marks of the horse). It is believed that the horse of Lord Muruga caused the marks, as he marched against the Demon Surapadma or the horse on which Lord Muruga rode and chased the robbers referred to earlier might have imprinted by them.

Pambatti Siddhar cave

The Pambatti Siddhar Cave is another shrine drawing our attention. It is located on the slopes towards the east and can be approached by a narrow path, protected by a stone hedge or parapet. One can notice a natural image of a snake on the rock. There is an underground passage from the cave to the primal shrine through which the Pambati Siddhar wended his way everyday to worship Lord Subramanya in the Company of his consorts .Pambatti Siddhar used this cave as his abode for meditation on Lord Muruga and attained salvation here. A snake comes to the cave everyday and feeds itself on the fruit and milk kept for it. Devotees offer milk and fruit for the snake.

Golden Chariot of Lord Muruga

Golden chariot or car festival happens mostly in the evenings of Kiruthigai especially on Aadi Kiruthigai. The clippings here portrays the grandiose appearance of God of Youth smiling in the golden car wishing good luck to all his sincere devotees.

Lord Muruga - Magnificant look in Golden Chariot

Where is Maruthamalai?

Maruthamalai is a small hill in Coimabatore 15KM away from Gandhipuram  - the center of Coimbatore. Perurpuranam lists the three neighbouring hills, vellingiri, Nili and Marudhamalai as the very manifestations of Lord Siva, Parvathi and Subramanya respectively and the three hills taken together as the very symbol of Somaskanda.

Buses from Gandhipuram to Maruthamalai -  1,  1-B,  1-D,  I-E,  S-12,  S-13,  S-15,  S-16,  S-26,  46,  70,  70-A,  70-B,  76,  92

Note:

Siddhas are mystic philosophers who exercise their mental faculties to the utmost and attain godhead by means of meditation and reflection. They are endowed with incredible powers of the mind by which they perform great miracles and astound the common world. Siddhas can set at rest all their senses and awaken their spirit alone. Thus they are bodily asleep and spiritually awake. In this blessed mood they enter into a personal communion with god.

It is believed that there were 18 Siddha’s. One of the 18 siddha’s used to animate dead snakes and dance with him, so he was popularly known as Pambatti Siddhar. Pambatti Siddhar greatly revered in the Kongu region, he is credited with having lived in the company of snakes and made them dance to his tunes. Once, in the course of his wanderings, he chanced to meet one, Sattai Muni Siddhar, a contemporary and counterpart who initiated him into the art of entering into trances - the Jeeva Samadhi Nilai.

Once he transmigrated into the dead body of a king and performed great miracles. He composed songs of enlightenment. 'Siddharudam' is a work, attributed to his prophetic genius. Lord Muruga took joy in teasing and tantalizing the Siddha with his spiritual pranks. Once as an enormous boulder came down, rolling gaining momentum, the siddha tried to halt it, arrested its movement and averted a great havoc.

Chanting this set of 27 names four times, is equivalent to one Ashtotara (108 names). Chanting this Ashtotara ten times will be a Sahasranama (1000 names) and that is highly recommended. 10 sahasranamas per day pays way to the Mother's grace!

Performing Kalasa Puja for Her is very auspicious during Navrathiri. Doing archana (offering flowers at the Mother's lotus feet with the recitation of every name) with gold/yellow colored fragrant flowers is highly recommended. This is the way to get sarva mangala sowbhagya - all auspiciousness and prosperity.

Sloka for overcoming delay in marriage

Saptha Kanya
Saptha Kanya refers to Seven Virgin Mothers who are Parivaara Devataas of AadhiParaaShakti. The Saptha Kannikas, are namely Brahmi, Mahe’shwari, Kowmaari, Vaishnavi, Vaaraahi, Indraani, and Chaamundi .  Traditionally, all the Hindu Temples in villages and rural areas of India, these Seven Virgin Mothers are consecrated as seven stones and worshipped as formless. These shrines are often called “Kanni Kovil” meaning “Virgin Temples”. The Saptha Kanya shrine is also always found in all Shiva temples.

Of these Kannikas, Vaaraahi is considered to be activating force of Lord Yamaa (The Lord of death), who has four hands displaying Varadha and Abhaya Mudras and holding Dhanda, Sword, Gada, Shanku (Conch), Plough, Chakra (Wheel), Bhoomi (Earth), and Lotus flower. Her vaahana is Buffalo. Shri Vaaraahi is Mada Naashinya, meaning She is the destroyer of Mada or Self-Pride.

Komatha - Abode of celestial Gods

Komatha
As you can see the captivating glimpse of Komatha also referred as Kamadenu which is always esteemed with motherly status, is given the prime importance in Hindu rituals and customs by first paying tribute to Her. She is considered to be the abode of 33 Gods. She is beleived to be originated from the milk of ocean during Ksheera Sagara Madhanam - the episode of  Churning of the Ocean of Milk in Vishnu Purana. The sight of Her itself is believed to be very auspicious and She is prayed as a wish fulfiller. It is also believed that by worshiping Her one could please all the Gods and Goddesses also and could nullify the Graha Doshas (Planetary effects).

While doing the Komatha puja, it is an immense belief that touching and chanting the appropriate Nama' s at certain places will please the Gods and Goddesses and also be blessed. About Srirangam:

Srirangam is the foremost of the eight self-manifested shrines (Swayam Vyakta Kshetras) of Lord Vishnu . It is also considered the first, foremost and the most important of the 108 main Vishnu temples (Divyadesams). This temple is also known as Thiruvaranga Tirupati, Periyakoil, Bhoologa Vaikundam, Bhogamandabam. The temple of Sri Ranganathaswami at Srirangam boasts an historic past of great kingdom and a civilization thousands of years old. In the Vaishnava parlance the term "KOIL" signifies this temple only. The temple is enormous in size. The temple complex is 156 acres in extent. It has seven prakaras or enclosures. These enclosures are formed by thick and huge rampart walls which run round the sanctum. There are 21 magnificent towers in all prakaras providing a unique sight to any visitor. This temple lies on an islet formed by the twin rivers Cauvery and Coleroon.

Legend:

The deity of Sri Ranganatha in Srirangam was first worshipped by Lord Brahma himself, before passing it onto the kings of Ikshwaku clan in which is born Lord Ram. After defeating Ravana in the war, Lord Ram thanks Vibheeshana by gifting the deity of Sri Ranganatha to him. On en route from Ayodhya to Sri Lanka, Vibheeshana stops at Srirangam on seeing river Kaveri. He places the deity of Sri Ranganatha on the banks of the river and goes for his shower. On his return he was shocked to see that the idol had turned up into a gigantic vigraha – idol of Sri Ranganatha and so he leaves for Sri Lanka as he could not carry it from Srirangam. Though Vibheeshana leaves to Srilanka, he prayed God that he should also have an eye on his country and so Sri Ranganatha is placed facing south, looking at Sri Lanka whereas in other temples, the deities face east.

As by the ‘phalasruti’ which says the benefit of singing Sri Ranganatha Ashtakam mentioned outside of the octet, the devotee who sings this in the morning will fulfil his desires and will attain the abode of Sri Ranganatha.

Deities with Lion Face

Lions are personified as the king of forest and mostly admired for its majestic appearance. Hindu mythology also doesn't miss the chance to embrace the mighty lion. It is mount for Goddess Durga who is called as Simhavahini.
Goddess Durga on Lion
Not stopping with that, the deities, themselves took avatar with lion face as this combination of lion and human forms represents the balance of good and evil. Lord Narasimha, Lord Sarabeswara, and Goddess Prathiyankara Devi are those mighty Gods who are worshiped as the savior against evils.
Lord Narasimha
Lord Sarabeswara
Goddess Prathiyankara Devi
The three deities avatars are linked in the given order. The story is like this.

Lord Narasimha

Narasimha, the fourth incarnation of god Vishnu, is half-lion half-human. This incarnation  is to to alleviate the sufferings of devotees symbolizing fight against evil and tyranny. Lord Narayana is considered to be the origin of the other transcendental forms of God.

As told in Markandeya Purana: In the beginning of the Satya yuga, Hiranyakashipu (the brother of Hiranyaksha who was killed by the Varaha Avtar) wanted to take revenge on the Devatas and in particular on Lord Vishnu. He wanted to become the master of all the three worlds - Heaven, Earth & Pathala. He went to Mount Mandarachala and began penance which continued for years. Due to the intensity of Penance, Lord Brahma appeared before Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyakashipu asked for immortality as boon. Brahma, however, declined, saying "All living beings must face death Hiranyakashipu. You can, however, choose your death wish."
Hiranyakashipu then asked for three conditions, as his death wish, "'O Brahma, let not death come to me either by man or beast, nor devil, nor god shall cause my death by day or by night with steel or stone or wood, indoors or outdoors, or earth or in sky. Grant me undisputed lordship over the world". Brahma agreed and Hiranyakashipu got his death wishes granted. Thus he became practically immortal.

Hiranyakashipu's wife Kayadhu gave birth to Prahlad in the Ashrama of Narada who told Prahlad about the glory of Lord Vishnu. Prahlad grew up and became an ardent devotee of Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu, however, wanted his son to be the king of the Asuras, strong and ruthless. Realising that Prahlad always prayed to Lord Vishnu, Hiranyakashipu took his son to Shanku and Amarka, the sons of Shukracharya, for schooling. All their efforts to inflence Prahlad failed.

One day the king challenged his son in the open court if Lord Vishnu was omnipresent? And if Prahalad could embrace the pillar in front to witness Lord Vishnu is in it also?

Prahlad did not hesitate even for a moment but rushed towards the pillar and embraced it. The heated iron did not burn him. The king got up from his throne in fury and hit the pillar with his mace.

To the surprise of everyone in court, The pillar cracked with a thundering sound and Vishnu appeared there in the form of Narasimha. One half of his body was of a lion and the other half of a man. It was twilight and Narasimha caught hold of the demon Hiranyakashipu and killed him on the spot in a moment by tearing up his body and drinking his blood..

Lord Narasimha was furious and roared. Because of the anger in Hiranyakashipu's body and the malicious effects of human blood, Narasimha was drunk on rage and could not be stopped. To calm him down with the power of compassion, originated Lord Sarabeswara.
Lord Sarabeswara

Unable to control the turbulence of Lord Narasimha, the Devatas pleaded Lord Shiva for help. As a result, to quell the anger of Lord Narasimha, Lord Shiva sends Veerabhadra powering Him with a shaft of light who assumes the magnificent form of Lord Sarabeswara . He appears as half-bird and half-beast, with two wings bearing Goddess Prathiyankara and Goddess Soolini on either side. The face is that of a Yali. Sarabeswara bears a deer, battleaxe, snake and fire in his four hands. He also bears Bhairava and Agni in his abdomen. Two of his four feet rest on a mountain. The benign grace of Lord Veera Sarabeswara is said to protect devotees from all kinds of malevolent forces. Upon seeing this, Lord Narasimha created Ganda-Berunda, a two headed-bird that was Sarabeswara's opposite. Upon seeing this, Sarabeshwara turned into Bhairava (Shiva's fierce form) and created Goddesses Pratyangira from his third eye.

Goddess Prathiyankara Devi

She is also referred to as Aparajitha – the invincible. She is believed to have emerged from the fire emanating from the third eye of Lord Sarabeswarar. It was Goddess Prathiyankara who aided in subsiding the anger of Lord Narasimha. Prathyangira ate the bird created by Lord Narasimha, displaying rage the like of which the gods had never seen before. She was praised as she calmed Narasimha down by sitting on his lap.She is lion – faced and is seated on a lion. Her four hands bear a noose in the form of a snake, trident, hand-drum and bowl (kabaala paathram). She wears a garland of skulls. In this Kali yuga, where evil is manifest in varied forms, Goddess Prathiyankara is regarded as the saviour of mankind, alleviating the sufferings of humanity. She possesses the power to offset the influences of black magic. Though fearsome in appearance, she is the very embodiment of benevolence and grace to her devotees.

The Sarabeswara, Prathyankira Devi and Narasimha avatars happened during the Pradosham time period. The Nitya Pradosham time period on the Thrayodasi thithi (the thirteenth thithi) is known as Paksha Pradosham; it occurs once in each paksham. It's one of the most spiritually potent times within each paksham (fortnight). The Sarabesvara, Ugraha Prathyankira Devi and Narasimha avatars must be worshipped during this time period.

Various forms of Lord Narasimha

There are totally seventy four forms of Lord Narasimha. Of them thirty forms are known and nine form them are very prominent. Mariamman - Aadi Special

Samayapuram Mariamman, Trichy

Mari is a tamil word spelt as Maari means rain. Mariamman is the mother Goddess for rain. She is the most ancient and popular deity among the village deities in southern India especially in Salem district of Tamilnadu. The Goddess is worshipped under several other names such as Amman, Atthu, Ayam Ayee (Mother) Dharmapuri (Mari with army) Magamayee ( Great Mother) and Vadivattha ( Beautiful Mother). All the names indicate an ancient form of ancestral mother worship.

Iconographically, Mari represented in a sitting posture with four bands. They hold a drum, a trident a bundle if ropes and a skull. Whilescholars believe that she is a goddess of the pre Aryan days, most ofthe common people believe her as Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva orDurga who arose from her to kill the asuras. Some people believe her tobe Renuka, the mother of Lord Parasurama.

Devi karumari, Thiruverkadu, Chennai

Mari Amman rules over discuses that bring death, especially small pox. At times of small-pox incidence, the leaves of the neem tree (netta azadirachia) sacred to the goddess, are spread on the bed of the afflicted person and a bunch of them tied in the entrance of the patients house indicating the presence of the goddess. In the benevolent aspect, the goddess brings rainy to put an end to the diseases which result from the heat.

She is believed to cure a variety of illness of those who offer silver sheet metal models of their affected organs. This type of prayer is commonly found in almost all Mari Amman temples in Salem.
