Sri Sai Sachcharira - Chapter -9 - Part 1

Effect of touch of Guru's hand and Sai Baba's words, URS on Ramanavami Day, Chandan celebration, Arrangement for the fare, Inter-relatedness of US and Ramanavami, Renovvation of mosque.
Shirdi Sai Baba, Mylappore, Chennai

Effect of touch of Guru's hand and Sai Baba's words

The power of the touch of the hand of Sadguru is great and astonishing. The subtle body, which is indestructible even by the fire and it envelopes the world, is vanquished by the mere touch of the hand of Guru. Sins of innumerable births are washed away. The mind of such people who have no interest in religious and Godly matters become inclined to piety. The voice gets chocked by ecstasy at the mere 'darshan' of Sri Sai Baba's enchanting form, tears begin to flow and when the heart is overtaken by emotion, bliss of Atmic experience follows with the feelings of "I am that"(So_Aham).

When ego begins to be inflated in devotees, then Guru by annihilating it bestows his power and enables them to attain their final aim and make them worthy of eternal happiness and contentment. The one who takes refuge in Baba becoming humble easily attains virtue, prosperity, pleasures and liberation. There are four paths leading to God-realization works, wisdom, yoga and devotion. Of these the path of devotion is full of pitfalls, and thorns. But if by relying upon Sadguru and avoiding pitfalls and thorns one proceeds further the ultimate aim is easily attained. For the upliftment of devotees the following words of assurance given by Sri Sai Baba are memorable.

In the house of devotees there shall be no shortage of food and clothings'. This is my special attribute that whosoever takes refuge in Me and worships Me in his innermost being I am always worried about his welfare. Lord Krishna too dwelt upon this in Gita. So do not worry unnecessarily for food and clothings'. If you are desirous of asking for something then ask only for God. By giving up the wordly praises and titles, get grace of God and his boon of being fearless, keep on holding fat to your "Ishta"(particular chosen form of God). Engage all your senses and mind in contemplation of God. Do not be attracted to anything material and be immersed in Me so that the tendancies of your mind are not drawn towards senses, progeny, wealth, name and fame. Then your mind shall become steady, peaceful and fearless. Attaining this state is indicative of 'sthitpragya'. If the wavering of mind is not controlled then it cannot be concentrated upon and ultimate goal cannot be achieved".

URS on Ramanavami Day

There was one inspector Shri Gopalrao Gund in Kopargavon village. He was a great devotee of Baba. He had three wives, but none had a child. By the race of Sri Sai Baba he got a son. In the event of being so happy in 1897 he got an idea that a fare or urs should be held in Shirdi. He expressed his idea to other devotees - Tatya Patil, Dada Kote Patil and Madhav Rao. They all liked the idea and they got evev the approval of Baba.

For holding urs was required Government permission. So an application was sent to the collector. But permission was not granted due to objection by village official, but on trying a second time for it the permission was finally granted and with the approval of Baba holding urs on Ramanavami day was decided accordingly.

But now there was difficulty of getting water. There were only two wells in village of which one used to be dry and water of the other was salty. Baba turned salty water to sweet water by dropping a flower into the well. But for how many people water from one well suffice? So Tatya Patil arranged for getting water from outside. Temporary storage of woods and bamboo were put up and boats were arranged. A friend of Gopal Rao Damu Anna Kasar liven in Ahmednagar. He was grieved beacuse of having no child. He too was blessed with a son by the grace of Sri Sai Baba. Sri Gund asked him to offer a flag. Another flag was given by Shri Nana Saheb Nimonar. Both the flags were taken in procession with great gaiety through out the village, and at last they were hoisted on the corners of the mosque which was called Dwarakamai by Baba. This programme continues to be held as before even till to-day.
Ramanavami at Shirdi

"Chandan" Celebration

This celebration was the idea of muslim devotee of Korhal Shri Amir Shakkar Dalal. Normally such a celebration is observed in the honor of Muslim Pir. Lots of sandal paste is collected by rubbing it on a stone sill and placed along with perfumed sticks in large flat vessels. The sticks are lighted and taken in procession to the mosque where the celebration comes to an end. The 'sandal paste' and burning perfumed sticks are scattered on Neem tree and around the mosque. For the first three years arrangements for this celebration were made by ShriAmir Shakkar and after him, his wife did the same. So flag procession by Hindus and 'Chandan' procession by the Muslims were taken out together. This tradition continues even till to-day.

Arrangement for the Fare

The sacred day of Ramanavami is very dear to the devotees of Sri Sai Baba. The external and internal matters were managed by Tatya Pati and a great devotee of Sri Sai Baba Radhakishna mai respectively. On this occassion their residence used to be full of guests and they had to take care of all people who gathered there. At the same time they had to make all necessary arrangements for the fare. The other job she used to do with pleasure was to sweep and clean the mosque and white-wash it. The walls and courtyardof the mosque got blackened due to smoke coming out of constantly burning fire inside it. when Baba would go to Chawadi for taking rest there during night then she used to do all the work. Everyhting including burning pier had to be taken out of the mosque and after cleaning and white-washing they had to be placed in their proper places and properly decorated. The most dear activity of Baba was feeding the poor, which was a part of all the celebrations. For this purpose grand feast used to be arranged. All this job used to be done at the residence of Radhakrishna mai. Many rich persons helped by contributing money. Several volunteers also took active part in the arrangements of the fare.

Inner-relatedness of Ramanavami and URS

In 1911, a changed occured in this programme. A devotee KrishnaraoJogeshwar Bhishma, the author of Sagunopasana, stayed one day before the fare in the Dixit Wada at Shirdi along with Dada Saheb Khaparne of Amaravati. When he was lying in its corridor, Laxmanarao alias Kaka Mahajani was going towards the mosque carrying with him articles of worship. They both exchanged their views how to hold URS fare together with Ramanavami celebration?

Sri Sai Sachcharira - Chapter -8

Shirdi Sai Baba - Suprabatha Darshan at Singapore
Installation of Paduka under Neem Tree, Wrestling Bout with Mohiddin, turning water into Oil, Pseudo-Guru Jauhar Ali

Installation of Paduka under Neem Tree

A devotee of Akkalkot Maharaj Bhai Krishnaji Alibagkar used to worship his picture daily. Once he decided to have 'darshan' and do worship of the 'paduka' of Maharaj's by going to Akkalkot (District - Sholapur). But before that Akkalkot Maharaj told him in a dream that now-a-days I am in Shirdi, you do my worship by going there. So Bhai by changing his programme went to Shirdi and worshipped Sri Sai Baba. He stayed at Shirdi for six months happily and as a mark of his dream he got 'paduka' made. He installed 'paduka' in Shaka year 1934 on an auspicious day of Shrvana month. Dada Kekkar and Upasani Maharaj completed the installation ceremony by observing proper rites. One Dixit priest was appointed for doing worship and the management was assigned to a devotee Meru Nayak.

The retired Mamalatdar of Thane Shri B.V.Dev was a great devotee of Sri Sai Baba. He enquired about this matter from Sagun Meru Nayak and Govind Kamalakar Dikshit. The full details of 'paduka' are published in Sri Sai Leela Part II number 1 page 25, which is like this - In 1912 a devotess, Ramarao Kodhare of Mumbai came to Shirdi for'darshan' of Baba. His compounder and another friend of his Bhai Krishnaji Alibagkar also came with him. The compounder and Bhai became great friends of Sagun Meru Nayak and G. K. Dikshit, while exchanging views on some matters, an idea occured to them why notto install 'paduka' in the historic memory of first advent of Sri Sai Baba in Shirdi and his living under 'Neem' tree?

When exchange of views began to take place about making of'paduka' then Bhai's friend, the compounder said that if his master Kothare comes to know about it he would get very beautiful 'paduka' made. Everyone accepted his suggestion and Doctor Kothare was informed about it. He arriving at Shirdi, prepared blue-print of 'paduka' and he consulted Upasani Maharaj about it in the temple of Kadova. Upasani Maharaj made some modifications and drew lotus flower etc., and composed the following sloka, which is a symbol of the importance of Neem tree and yogic powers of Baba:
Sai Paduka under Neem Tree, Shirdi

Sada nimbvrakshaysya mooladhivasat,
Sudhastravirham tiktampya priyam tam,
Tarum kalpavarkshy adhikam sadhyantam,
Namamiswaram sadgurum sainathan.
The idea of Upasani Maharaj appealed to everyone and it was acted upon. 'Paduka' were got prepared in Mumbai and were sent to Shirdi through the compounder. According to Baba's command it's installation was done on the full - moon day of the Shravana month. In the morning of this day at 11 o'clock U.K. Dikshit brought them placing on his head from the temple of Kandova to Dwarakamai with great festivity. Touching the 'paduka' Baba said: These are the Lotus feet of the Lord. Install them under the Neem tree. Only one day before this, a Parasi devotee Pashta Sheth of Mumbai sent Rs. 25 by money order. Baba gave the money for the installation of 'paduka'. In the installation ceremony a total of Rs. 100/- were spentand Rs. 75 were collected by donations. For the first five yers Kodhare kept on sending Rs. 2/- monthly for lighting the lamp. He also sent steel - grill to be fixed around the 'paduka', Sagun Meru Nayak met the expenditure (Rs. 7.50 paise) on cartage of steel-grill from the station and for expenses on fixing the roof - top on it. Now-a-days Jarvashi (Nana Pujari) does the worship and Sagun Meru Nayak offers 'naivedhya' and lights the evening lamp.

Bhai Krishnaji was a disciple of Akkalkot Maharaj before. While going to Akkalkot in Shaka year 1834 on the auspicious occassion of 'paduka' installation he had come to Shirdi and after having 'darshan' when he asked for permission to go to Akkalkot, then Baba began to say thus: "O! what is there in Akkalkot? Why do you go there invain? Maharaj of that place is here itself(pointing to himself)". Hearing this Bhai gave up the idea of going to Akkalkot. After installation of 'paduka' he often visited Shirdi, Shri B.V.Dev at the end has written that Hemadpant did not know the details of these matters otherwise he would not have missed writing them in hi Sri Sai Sachcharitra.

Wrestling Bout with Mohiddin Tamboli

A wrestler named Mohiddin Tamboli used to live in Shirdi. Baba had an argument with him on same matter. As a result of which both had a wrestling bout and Baba was defeated. After this the life of Baba underwent sudden change. Now he dropped his long robe, tied a long cloth on his wait as undergarment and covered his head with a piece of cloth. He used to sit and sleep on a tattered mat. Thus he appeared to be very contented by wearing old and torn garments. He used to utter "Poverty is princely of the first order, higher than all riches. God is the brother of the poor."

Sai Baba neither kept company of people, nor did he hold conversation with them. Whenever someone asked him question then only he gave a brief reply. During the day time he sat under the tree. Sometimes he kept sitting under the shade of "Babul' tree.On the bank of a drain at the curvature of the village and in the evening would go for a stall anywhere around. In Neemgao he used to go often to the reidence of Baba Saheb Dengale. Baba loved him greatly. His younger brother named Nana Saheb had no progeny inspite of his marrying twice. Baba Saheb sent Nana Saheb to Shirdi to have 'darshan' of Baba. After sometime by the grace of Baba NanaSaheb got a son. From this time onwards a large number of people began to come to Shirdi for 'darshan' of Baba annd his glory spread far and wide. His fame reached Ahmadnagar also. Then began coming to Shirdi Nana Saheb Chandorkar, Kesav Chidambaram and several other devotees. The whole day Baba remained surrounded by his devotees and at night he slept in the deplted mosque.

At this point in time all that he had his belongings were a smoke - pipe, tobacco, one mug a long robe, apiece of cloth to put around his head, and a stick, which he always kept with himself.

He used to tie a piece of white cloth around his head in a manner that it fell on his back by the left side from the ear so as to appear as if it were a bunch of hair. He never put on shoes or chappals in his feet. He would put on a waist-cloth and in order to protect himself from cold kept on sitting in front of burning fire facing the south. He used to put wood in fire himself and burnt in it all his ego, desires and attachments to senses. He would always utter aloud 'Allah-Malik'. The mosque which he occupied was as big as equal to two small rooms and it was here only that all devotees used to have his 'darshan'. Some alterations were made only after 1912. The old mosque was renovated and a floor was added inside. Beside shifting to mosque, baba lived for a long time in 'Takia'. He used to dance and sing enchantingly Bhajans (devotional songs)by putting on anklets on his ankles and get immersed in ecstasy.

Turning Water into Oil

Baba had great love for lighting lamps. He would get oil in the evening by begging for it from shopkeepers and decorate the mosque by lining with burning lamps. This practice continued for sometime without any hindrances. Now the shopkeepers got fed up with it and unitedly they decided that now on wards no one would give oil. As usual when Baba reached to them for begging oil everywhere he got a refusal. But without complaining to anyone Baba returned to the mosque and put the dry wigs in the lamps. The shopkeepers were watching him with great curiosity to see what Baba does now. Baba took up the mug which had a few drops of oil, put some water into it and he gulped the oil mixed water. After sometimes, he poured it out in the mug and put the same oil or water in the lamps. When the curious shopkeepers saw the lamps lighting during the whole night as before they fell repentant for their wrong doing and they asked Baba to forgive them. Baba pardoned them and cautioned them for good behavior in the future.

Pseudo-Guru Jauharali

After five years of wrestling bout with Mohiddin there came a faqir Jauhar Ali along with his disciples to Rahata. He began to live in a house opposite to Birbhadra temple. The faqir was learned and he had learnt, versus of Holy Quran by heart. He had sweet voice, many faithful villagers began to come to him and he got due respect. He decided to build a Idgah in front of Birbhadra temple by the people. Some quarrel took place on account of this, because of which leaving Rahata Jauhar Ali came to Shirdi and began to live with Baba in the mosque. He had won over the people by his sweet talk. He began even to call Baba to be one of his disciples. Baba raised no objections and accepted being called his disciple. Baba never disrespected him and kept on doing his duties to him as a disciple whole-heartedly, and served him in various ways. Both of them used to come to Shirdi, but they mainly stayed in Rahata.

The devotees of Sri Sai Baba did not like his staying in Rahata. So all of them together went to Rahata for bringing Baba back from there. They met Baba near the Idgah and told him the reason of their coming. Baba explained those people to return to Shirdi before the coming of faqir. The conversation was still going on when the faqir arrived. he got flared up by seeing the people to take away his disciple like that. After some arguments the matter was settled and the situation took a sudden turn. Atleast it was decided that let the faqir and his disciple stay in Shirdi. So they returned to Shirdi and began to live there.

After sometime Devidas put the Guru to test and found certain faultsin hi. Twelve years before Baba had arrived in Shirdi along with the marriage party of the son of brother-in-law of Chand Patil, Devidas had come probably at the age of 10-12 years, to Shirdiand lived in Hanuman temple. Devidas was well-built, handsome and of sharp intellect. He was the veritable symbol of sacrifice and learning. Many people took him to be their Guru (Preceptor). People brought Jauhar Ali to hi. Jauhar Ali was badly defeated in the debate and he ran away to Vaijapur leaving Shirdi. After several years he came to Shirdi and worshipped the Lotus feet of Sri Sai Baba. His illusion that he was guru and Sri Sai Baba his disciple had vanished.

Sai Sacharitra - Chapter 7

Sri Sai Bab's coming again to Shirdi with a marriage party, welcomed being address by the word Sai, meeting of Saint with Saints, Baba's attire and daily routine.

Shirdi Sai Baba, Singapore

Sri Sai Baba's coming again to Shirdi with marriage party

Chand Patil was a rich man who lived in the village Dhoop Gaon of Aurangabad (Nizamstate). When he was going to Aurangabad, his mare got lost on the way. he searched for her diligently for two months, but could not find her anywhere.Atlast he returned to Aurangabad with the saddle with him. Then after going for 14 miles he saw a faqir sitting under a mango tree preparing for his smoke, who was wearing a cap on his head, a long robe on his body and having a stick with him. being called by the faqir, Chand patil went to him. Seeing the saddle, the aqir asked what is this saddle for out of despair Chand Patil replied, "what should I say? I had a mare, she is lost and this is here saddle."

The faqir said, "Just search a little around the drain". When Chand Patil went near the drain he was astonished to find his mare gazing there. He thought that the faqir is a "Siddha-Purush" (man with mystic powers). When he returned along with his maree to the faqir by then the smoke pipe was ready, only two things remined - one fire to light tobacco pipe and second water to wet a piece of cloth to hold it with. The faqir thrust his tongs into ground and cameout burning coal to put on the pipe. Then faqir thrust his stick against the ground again and there come forth water flowing out of it. The faqir drenched a piece of cloth in it and held the pipe in his hand holding it with the wet cloth.

So after making preliminary preparation, the faqir smoked his pipe and therafter passed it on to Chand Patil. Chand Patil was greatly astonished by watching this miracle. Chand Patil persuaded the faqir to accompany him to his house and the faqir went along with him and stayed there for sometime. At Patil's house the wedding of the son of his brothe-in-law was about to take place and the marriage party was to go to Shirdi. So Chand Patil arranged everything to go to Shirdi. The faqir too accompanied the marriage party. after the wedding being over without any hassles, the marriage party returned to Dhoopgaon. But the faqir stayed on behind in Shirdi and lived there for his entire life.

Welcomed being addressed with the word Sai

When the marriage party reached Shirdi, it was provided facility of staying in the plot of Mlasapati near the temple of Khandova. The carts were being unfastened in the plot in front of the temple and the people of the marriage party began to alight down from their carriage. seeing the young faqir alighting from his carriage Mlasapati welcomed him by addressing "Come, O Lord! Sai" and present there also welcomed him by addressing the same way. Thereafter he became known and famous by the name Sai.

Meeting of Saint with Saints

Reaching Shirdi, Sri Sai Baba began living in the mosque. There lived a saint for several years named Devidas before Baba's arrival at Shirdi. He was very dear to Baba. Sometimes he used to live with him in Hanuman temple, and sometimes in Chawadi. After sometimes another Saint named Jankidas arrived in Shirdi. Now Baba began spending a lot of time in holding conversation with hi. Jankidas also once in a while came over the place of Sai Baba.

A household Viashya saint Gangagir of Puntambe often used to come to Baba when for the first time he saw Sai bab taking water to irrigate plants in the garden, he was greatly astonished. In clear terms, he began to declare aloud that great is fortune of Shirdi where such a priceless pearl has arrived, whom you see now labouring so hard is not an ordinary person. As a matter of fact, this land is greatly fortunate and sacred, that is why it has got such a priceless pearl.
Similarly, a famous saint disciple of Akkalkot Maharajcnamed Anandnath(yevel math), who had arrived with some residents of Shirdi, held similar view.

Baba's Living and Daily Routine

Baba did not get his hair shaved during his young age and he always used to live like sufi Saint. When he used to go to Rahata, he purchased plants of Marigold, Jasmine and Juhi and after cleaning them properly he planted them in good land and irrigated them with water himself. A devotee named Vaman Tatya used to give him daily two clay pots. With those clay pots Baba used to irrigate the plants with water taking it from the well. He would draw the water from the well and after pouring it on the plants in the garden put them under the tree in the evening. As soon as he put the pots there, they would be broken since they were made of raw clay. The next day Tatya would give him two clay pots. This sequence continued for three years and with Baba's great efforts now there stands to day a beautiful garden, where Samadhi-Mandir's palacious buiding is situated at the very place and is adored by teemimg-millions of devotees as sacred place of pilgrimage.

Sai Sachcharitam - Chapter 6
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bhagwant Roa Kshirsagar's story, Dasganu's Prayag Bath, Sai Baba's First advent in Shirdi, Three wada
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bhagwant Roa Kshirsagar's story

What a great interest Sri Sai Baba had in the worship of Vitthal became clear from the story of Bhagwant Roa Kshirsagar. The father of Bhagwant Roa was a great devotee of Vithova. he used to make a pilgrimage every year to pandharpur. In his house he had a picture of Vithova, which he worshipped daily. After his death, pilgrimage, worship, Shraddha, etc., everything was given up by his son Bhagwant Rao. When Bhagwant Roa reached Shirdi, Baba began to say on seeing him thus, " His father was my great friend. So I have called him here. he never gave 'Prashad' and starved me and Vithova. So i inspired him to come over here. Now I shall draw him forcibly towards worship".

Dasganu Prayag's Bath

Prayag is famous pilgrimage place on the banks of confluence of Ganga and Yamuna holy rivers. There is a belief among the Hindus that by taking bath there one's sins are washed away. On every holy occasion thousands of devotees gather and take advantage of taking bath there. Once dasganu also thought of going there for taking the holy bath. For this purpose, he went to Baba to take His permission. Baba told him, "what was the need of going that far? Our prayag is indeed here itself. Believe in me." Then a great miracle took place. As soon as Dasganu bowed at the lotus feet of Baba, there flowed out instantly holy water of Ganga-Yamuna from the feet of Baba.  watching this miracle dasganu was so overcome with devotion and love for Baba that tears began to flow from his eyes. He was enthrilled and spontaneously began to chant the hymns of praises to Sri Sai Baba.

Sri Sai Baba's first advent in Shirdi

Nobody knew anyhing about Parents, birth and place of Sri Sai Baba. Lots of research was done in this matters and enquiries made with the people, but no reliable information could be available. As a matter of fact we remain completely ignorant about these matters. Namdev and Kabir had no human birth, because they were not born like ordinary people. They were found as babies in the lap of nature. Namdev was found by Gonai lying at the bank of Bhimarathi and Kabir by Tamal at the bank of Bhagirathi. Similar was the case with Sri Sai Baba. he had appeared in Shirdi at the age of 16 years sitting under the neem tree for the benediction of devotees. Even at that time , He appeared to be God-realised and knocked out delusion (Maya) and liberation craved for His lotus feet. An old woman of Shirdi, mother of Nanachopdar, described Him as follows:
One young man, healthy, smart and extremely handsome was first seen sitting under 'Neem' tree engrossed in deep meditation. He cared nothing of cold and heat. people were astonished to see Him doing such hard penance. During day He met none and wandered all night. People would make enquiries about Him as to from where He came?  His form and face was so enchanting that by merely having a look at Him once people were attracted to Him. He always remained sitting under neem tree and went to nobody's door. although He appeared young, yet His conduct was like that of saints. he was verily, the form of sacrifice and non-attachement.

Once an interesing event occured. A devotee received command of lord Khandova. Out of inquisitiveness people asked Him, "O Lord! Please do tell us whose son is this boy and from where has He come here?" Lord khandova asked for a spade and pointed to dig at a particular place. when that place was dug deep bricks under a stone were discovered where four lamps were found being alight. The entry led to a caave where a building in the form of cow, wooden planks, garlands etc., were seen lying.

Lord Khandova began to say that this lad did penance at this place for twelve years. then people made enquiries from the lad, but He avoided by telling that this is the sacred place of my preceptor(Guru), and therefore, it is a sacred plaace worthy of worship for me. Then people closed the door as of before. Just as Ashwasth and Audhumbar trees are treated sacred, likewise baba treated this neem tree sacred and lovable. Mahalsapati and other devotees of Shirdi considered this place as 'Samadhi' of Baba's preceptor and always paid obeisaance to it.

Three wadas

The land around 'Neem' tree was purchased by vinayak Sathe who built a graand building there, which came to be known as Sathe wada. That was the only place to stay for the pilgrims coming there from far off places and it used to remain always crowded. a platform was raised around 'Neem' tree. In the south direction under the stairs there is a small temple where people sit on the platform facing the north. It is a general belief that devotees who would on Thursday and riday place burning fragrant sticks there shall always remain comfortable in life by the Graace of God. This wada was in depleted condition and required urgent renovation, which was done by the sai organisation.

Later another wada was built and it was named Dikshit wada. When Kaka Saheb Dikshit(legal advisor) was in england he got injured in his leg in some accident there. He underwent several treatments, but his leg was not healed. Nana Saheb Chandrokar advised him to avail of the grace of Sri Sai Baba. so in 1909, he had 'darshan' of Baba. He prayed Baba for the removal of incapicitation of his heart insead of his leg. By the mere 'darshan' of Baba he got so much exaltation that he accepted to stay in shirdi for ever. So he built his wada for the stay of devotees. The stone-laying ceremony was on 9-12-1910. The same day two other special events took place (1) Shri Dada Saheb Kahparne got permission to return to his home and (2) Night 'Aarti' commenced at 'Chavadi'. Within a short time the wada was completely built and on the auspicious occasion of Ramnavami(1911) it was inaugurated with approprite rites.

Thereafter, another mansion-like wada was built by the famous gentleman of Nagpur Shri Buty. Lots of money was spent on its construction and his entire property became worthy of a great cause, because the mortal coils of Baba lay resting there permanently and at present it is well known as 'Samadhi Mandhir'. there was a beautiful garden at this spot before. Baba Himself watered the plants grown there and took care of them. Earlier where not even small cottage was available, now there were threee huge wadas built, of which Sathe wada was greatly useful in those days.

Sai Sacharitra - Chapter 5

Sai Sachcharitam - chapter 5

Nission of Saints & Sai Avatar, Holy tirth Shirdi, Sri Sai Baba's personality, Gaulibuva's experience, Appearance of Vitthal.

Lord Sri Krishna in the seventy - eight sloka of chapter four of Gita has said, " Whenever declination of 'Dharma' (righteousness) and ascendance of evil takes place I incarnate. In order to reinstate righteousness and destroy evil doers and uplift the virtuous and remove their sufferings, I incarnate from age to age. Saints are the embodiments of God. Emerging at appropriate time, they fulfil their mission in their own unique characteristic way.

Such an opportune time is also indicated and when the four 'Verna' (classes) Brahmin, martial and trading classes give up their respective duties and the 'Shudra' snatch away functions appropriate to these upper classes; When the saintly people are disrespected and maligned; When people give up distinction between eatable eatable and non-eatable foods and indulge in intoxications; When followers of various religion begin to quarrel among themselves and the people begin to develop indifference to religion; When yogis give up their meditation and when the common people hold he view that money, progeny and wife are the only aspirations to be ful-filled. Thus when people begin to degenrate into misdeeds by being misguided then Sints emerge to establish righteousness by their teachings and actions. They indeed by giving proper guidance inspire us to follow the path of truth and virtue. Several saints like Nivratinath, Gyandev, Muktabai, Namktabai, Namdev, Gora, Kasai, Savan mali ramdas etc., appeared in order to show the path of truth from time to time. Last of all these appeared the avatar of Sai Baba in Shirdi.

Holy thirth Shirdi

The banks of sacred Godavari river flowing through Ahmednagar are indeed greatly fortunate where many saints were born and lived. Sri sant gynaneswar Maharaj is prominent among them. Shirdi is situated in Kopargaon Taluka of ahmadnagar district. Crossing over Godavari river there goes the straight way to Shirdi. after going eight miles ahead when we reach Neemgao then Shirdi comes in such as Ganagpur, Navsinhwarhi, and Audumbar, Shirdi is a famous pilgrimage place. As Damoji purified Mangaal verha(near Pandharpur) samarth Ramdas purified saijangarh and the incarnation of Dattatreya Narsimgh Sarswati purified Warhi in the like manner by being incarnated at Shirdi Sai Nath purified it..

Sri Sai Baba's Personality

By proximity of Sri sai baba the importance of Shirdi had enhanced greatly. He had conquered the worldly ocean, which is usually very difficult for ordinary mortals. Peace was his ornamentation and he was wisdom(Gynanaswaroop) in human form. Devotees received shelter in Him. Among the doners, He was like Karna - the king of donars; and he was essence of all wisdom. He had no interest in wordly affairs. He always remained engrossed in His true self of 'Atomic reality'. his heart was always glittering like sparkling glass. From His mouth flowed incessantly sweet nectar - like words. He was totally indifferent to praise or condemnation. he used to discourse fearlessly, lived in the company of all sorts of people, watched the dance and acting of nautch girls and heard quwwalies as well.

Inspite of doing all this His deep meditation was never disturbed. God's name was always in His lips and He constantly kept on uttering - "Allah Malik", "Ram Maalik", when the world kept awake inner-shelf he was unrulledd like the deep sea. No one could fathom the way of His working. In the general sense, He lived at one place, but He was very fully aware of what was taking place in the whole world. His divine court was unique.

He used to say anecdotes often, but His peace was never disturbed. He always used to sit by the side of wall of the mosque and go for morning and evening walks towards Lendi and Chawadi, and even then He was engrossed in His 'Atomic-self'. Being self-realised and having attained the highest Siddhis and mystic powers He used to behave like ordinary aspirants. He was humble and without pride. He always gave happiness to all.  Shirdi became holy by the mere touch of His Lotus feet. Its importance became extra-ordinary. As Gynaneswar exalted Aalandi and Eknath Paithad, the same way exaltation was bestowed upon Shirdi by Sai Baba. Shirdi became for devotees another Pandharpur, Jagannath Puri, Dwaraka, Banaras(Kashi), Mahakaleswar and Kaukarna Mahabaleswar.

To have 'darshan' of sai was to receive Vedic mantra by which the wordly attachments decreased and the path of self-realisation became easy. His darshan was verily Yoga practice and conversation with Him was enough to get rid of sins. worshipping His holy feet was like taking a holy dip in the Ganga at praying as such and by drinking water of the worship of His holy feet all wishes got fulfilled.

His command was the command of the Vedas for us. By partaking of 'Prasad' and 'Udi' purification of mind was attained. He was our Sri ram and sri krishna who gave us liberation; He alone was our God-oncorporeal. he was always the living form of Consciousness, Bliss, Truth and Benediction.

In the general sense, Shirdi was His main headquarters but His sphare of divine works was spread to Punjab, Kolkatta, North-india, Gujarat, Dhaka, Konkani. The glory of Sri Sai Baba soon spread far and wide and devotees began to come from different places for his 'darshan' and to avail of His benevolence. By His mere 'darshan' people whether of pure or impure disposition got peace of their mind and experienced bliss in His proximity as was the case with the 'darshan' of Vithova at pandharpur. There is no exaggeration in this. Let us now see it with the experience of a devotee given here.

Guali Buva's experience

Guali Buva was approximately 90 years old. he was apilgri of Pandharpur. He used to live eight months at pandharpur and four months(July-October) at the bank of Ganga. he had a donkey with hm to carry his luggage and was always accompanied by a disciple. Every year he would go to Pandharpur and visit Shirdi on his return. He had deep faith in Baba. he would stare without being disturbed at baba for long and would pronounce spontaneously that He is Pandharinath avatar of vitthal who is the Lord of destitute, the forlorn and the Lord of poor and meek. Guali Buva was great devotee of Vithova. he would undertake several travels to Pandhari and had direct experience that Sri Sai Baba was indeed Pandharinath.

Appearance of Vithal

Sri Sai Baba had great passion for contemplation of God and chanting His divine glories. He always called out 'Allah Maalik' and got 'Sankirtan' performed by devotees which came to be knon as 'Namsaptah'(week-long 'Sankirtan').

Once He commanded dasaganu to perform 'Nama-Sankirtan'. Dasaganu pleaded with Him that he accepted His command, but he must get an assurance that Vitthal shall definitely appear at the end of the week. Touching His chest, Baba said Vitthal shall definitely appear, but simultaneously faith and keen inquisition is alsi inevitable on the part of devotees. Dankpuri of Thakurnath, Pandhari of Vitthal, Dwaraka of ranchchorh is here itself. None needs to go afar. Will Vitthal come from somewhere else? He is, verily, present here. When devotees love and faith shall over-flow Vitthal shall himself appear instantly.

After Sankirtan being over, when Kaka Saheb Dixit, as usual sat in meditation after taking bath then he had a vision of Vitthal. When he reached at noon for 'darshan' of baba then Baba asked him, "Did Vitthal Pati come? Did you have His vision? he is very instable, hold on to Him fast. If there be slightest carelessnee He will escape and run away". This was an event of morning, and at noon he had another vision again. That very day a picture vendor came there with 25-30 pictores of Vithova. This picture was exactly alike the one Kaka Saheb had seen in his vision. He was astonished and happy at seeing His picture aand remembering the words of Baba spoken to him in this respect, he bought a picture with great delight and installed it in his worship room.

The retired Mamalatar of tada shri B. V. Dev has proved it by his researches that Shirdi falls within Pandharpur. In the south, Pandharpur is well known place of Sri Krishna. Therefore Shirdi itself is Dwarka. There is another narrative about Dwarka which is taken from Skand Puran(part 2 of page 90) written by K. Narayan Ayyair. It is as follows:
Chaturvarnamapi Varganam yatra Dwarani Sarvatrah.
Ato dwaravakeetyukta Vidvadbhistatva vadibhih.

Chapter - 4, Sri Sai Charitham

Rohila's story, Baba's sweet and Nectar-like words

Shirdi Sai Baba
Once an individual of Rohila caste came to Shirdi. He was tall and well-built. Being enchanted with the love of Baba, he began to stay there. He used to recite the versus of holy Q'uran in loud and piercng tone and often shouted: 'Alla-hu-Akbar' aloud. When the people of Shirdi returned to their homes at night after day-long labour in the fields, they could not sleep due to noise of piercing loud shouting of Rohila, because of which they experienced great inconvenience. For several days they kep quiet, but when the inconvenience became intolerable then reaching to Baba they pleaded with hm to stop Rohila from shouting aloud at night.

Baba did not pay attention to them and ignored their imploration. Instead, he rebuked the villagers telling them to mind their own business and ignore Rohila. Baba told them that Rohila's wife is of bad temper and she troublked him and Rohila, but she dared not to appear before him because of his recitation aloud of the versus of holy Q'uran. So he is in peace and happy with himself. In fact, Rohila had no wife and Baba only pointed to his unholy thoughts. Baba used to give importance to prayer and worship of God instead of any other things. Therefore taking the side of Rohila, Baba persuaded the villagers to tolerate quietly for some time such inconvenience.

Baba's sweet and Nectar-like words

One day devotees were returning to their respective lodges after the noon 'Aarti' when Baba in his sweet nectar-like words said thus: "Wherever you may be, whatever you may be doing, always remember this that whatever you do I am always aware of it. I am the indweller of all beings. It is I whom all living and non-living beings are merged. I too amm the director and controller of the entire cosmos. I am the creator, ustainer and destroyer of all existence. None can harm my devotees. One who ignores meditating upon Me gets entangled in delusion (Maya). All beings, appearances, changing existence and this cosnmos are Me Very form."

After hearing these sweet nectar-like words, I firmly decided that in future I shall not serve anyone except my Guru (Preceptor). "I shall get a job" - These words of Baba began to resound in my mind. I began o think would it indeed happen so? Future events proved Baba's words turned out to be true and I got a job. After thus being care free, I remained in uninterrupted service of Baba for the rest of my life. Before concluding this chapter, I have a humble request to reader that they should concentrate on Baba's 'Leelas' waywarness of mind, and attachement to senses, and do worship devotedly and not involve themselves in other unnecessary practices. They should follow only one easily available way and that is listening to divine sports of Sai; and thus their ignorance shall vanish and the gate-way to liberation be opened.

Chapter - 3, Sai Saritham

Baba's permission for writing the book, inspiration to devotees, Sai Baba's stories as the beacon-light, his matherly love.

As it has been said in the previous chapter, while giving his permission to write Sai Satcharitha Baba had said that you have my full permission to do so. Concentrating your mind have faith in my words and keep on doing your work fearlessly.

If my 'leelas' are witten, then ignorance shall vanish and by listening to them with faith and love devotees shall experience strong waves of bliss emerging forth in their hearts uprooting wordly intellect and ego. Whosoever shall dive deep in these 'Leelas' shall come upon the pearls of wisdom.

Hearing these words, henadpant became very happy and fearless. He felt confident that now this work shall be accomplished. Looking at Shama, Baba said," Whosever shall lovingly remember my name I shall fulfill all his desires. His devotion shall progressively enhance. Whoever shall chant my attributes with faith, I shall help him in all possible ways. Those devotees who like Me with their heart and soul shall be naturally enthrilled listening to My stories. Believe me, whoever shall chant my 'Leelas' shall atain highest bliss and everlasting contentment. It is special feature of me that whosoever takes refuse in Me, faithfully worships Me, and constantly remembers Me and Meditates upon Me, I grant him liberation."

"Whosoever remembers My name and worships Me, contemplates My leelas lovingly how  can the worldly carvings and tendancies of worldly desires exist in such devotees? I save them from falling prey to death."

"By merely listening to My stories liberation shall be attained. Therefore, listen to My stories with faith and contemplate on them. this alone is the path to get happiness and contentment."

Baba's stories as the Beacon-light

Light houses are built in the sea in-order that sailors may avoid the hills and cliffs and avert accidents and ships are saved from being damaged. Likewise, in the ocean of wordly life Sai Baba's stories are the beacon-light. They are sweeter than nectar and have potential to make living simple. When they are poured into the heart through the ears, the worldly intellect and ego are destroyed and by contemplation thereon in the heart all doubts are resolved and the dross on the intellect removed and higher intellectual awareness dawned upon giving reise to "Pragya". By listening to the immaculate glories of baba described in these stories with faith, the sins of devotees shall be uprooted. Therefore, this is an easy way to liberation.

It is said in the scriptures that in 'Satyug' the penance and self-control, in 'Tretyuga', the sacrifice, in 'Dwaparyuga' worship of deities, and in 'Kaliyug', namasankirtan is the most effective way of spiritual  practice available to aspirants and people of spiritual disppsition as the means of liberation. 'Namasankirtan' is easily available to all the four classes, whereas other means of yoga, abstention, contemplation and meditation are difficult to be practised. By listening to divine sports and chandting of 'Namasankirtan' one can easily attain the spiritual aspiration and by doing so his natural tendancies of sensus craving and sense gratification are transformed into sublime emotions and feelings of devotion an service leading to become desireless and proceeding towards self-realisation. For bestowing this sort of exaltedness Sai got his life-stories witten for the devotees. He assured thus, " By doing so listener's mind shall attain peace and when the concentration becomes deep and faith confirmed then the indivisibility with God and unbroken consciousness of Saichat Ananda shall be attained. All the sins of previous births shall be wiped out by only chanting "Sai", "Sai".

Inspiration to Devotees

Inspiration is given by God to some devotees to build temples, some to build bathing Ghats at sacred rivers, some to go on pilfrimage to the places of pilgrimage and holy places, some to perform 'Namasankirtan' etc. but God inspired me to write Sri Sai Satcharita. I was totally unable for this stuperdous task because of having no knowledge of divine works. Therefore, why should I have dared to do so? Who is capable of writing the life-story of Sri Sai Maharaj? It is because of his grace alone that compilation of this undertaking could be possible. When I commenced writing the book Baba annihilated my ego and He Himself accomplished the work and composed his own story. Therfore, credit for writing this book must go to Him alone and not to me.

While being a Brahmin by birth, I was devoid of any apiritual vision and therefore, absolutely and unequal to tthe task. What is not possible to be done when grace of god is upon an individual? Even the dumb becomes incessant talker, the lame climbs the hill. God alone hets his works done easily by those who otherwise are not capable to do the same by themselves.

Let the devotees now dwell uopn these stories in straight forward manner, but at the same time meditating on the enchanting form of Sai in their heart and trying to be worthy of Guru, devotion of God and become thus deireless and attain self-realisation. Completion of Sai satcharitha has been possible only with the grace of Sai. I have only been made an instrument by Him.

His motherly Love

It is well known that the cow loves its calf the most. Her udder is always full of milk and when the hungry calf rushes to her udder, milk instantly flows out and the half is satiated. likewise, am mother of human child takes care of the needs of her infant even before it occurs, and the infant shows the inclination, and feeds the baby at the right time. She grooms and decorates the infant without the child seeking for it and she is immensely delighted by seeing the infant well groomed. Love of mother is indeed wonderful, extraordinary and unselfish, which has no parallel in the world. Jus in the same way, the Sadguru has love for the desciple. Sai Baba had similar love for me indeed. There is an example for this.

I was retired from service in 1916. Whatever pension I used to get was inadequate for meeting the living expenses of my family. The same year, I visited Shirdi on the Gurupoornima day along with other devotees. There Anna Chinchanikar on his behalf prayed Baba thus, " Have mercy on him. The pernsion he gets is not sufficient for meeting his family expenses. The family is enlarging. Graciously help him to get another job so tha his miseries are removed and he may live happily."

Baba replied thus, " He will get a job. But now he should get happiness only by doing my service. His desires shall always be fulfilled. He should be gracious and docile towards all and worship Me in the innermost of his heart. if he can do like that then he shall be ever happy."

Chapter 2, Sai Satcharita

In the previous chapter the writer of the original work in Marathi language has shed light on the grounds which inspired him to commence his unique Sri Sai Satcharita. Those who are deserving to read this book and the related matters are dealth with in this chapter.

The object of writing the book

Baba’s ‘Leela’ how he eradicated the cholera epidemic by wheat grinding and getting it scattered all over the village boundary has already been described in the first chapter. I heard other ‘leelas’ too, which enthralled my heart and the fountain of bliss blossomed forth into the composition of this book. I contemplated in my mind that the description of such ‘Leelas’ will prove to be entertaining and instructive to the devotees and their sins shall for ever be uprooted. Therefore, I commenced writing Baba’s life story and his nectar-like teachings, which is neither complicated, nor confined to any limits, but surely, it shows the real path to truth and spirituality.

Inability and boldness in commencement of the undertaking

Hemadpant felt that he was not competent and suitable to undertake this work of writing the book. He was bemused thus: I do not even know well the biography of my dear friend, nor am I familiar with his nature. Then, how a fool like me can dare to write the life story of a living great saint. Even Vedas fail to delineate the nature of incarnation (Avatar). It is absolutely necessary to be a saint oneself before one can attempt to understand another saint. Then I am entirely unsuitable to describe his glories. It needs a great deal of boldness to write the life story of a saint and it might happen that I become a laughing-stock before the people. Therefore, in order to get Sai’s grace, I began to pray God.

The jewel among the Marathi saints Sant Gyaneshwar Maharaj says that God is very much pleased with the one who writes the life-story of a saint. Sant Shiromani Tulasi Das also says thus:

“ Satcharit shubh saris Kapasu
Niras Vishad Gunmay Fal Jassu.
Jo Sahi Dukh Par chhidra Durva
Vandniya Jehi Jag Jas Pava.”

(Character of saints is auspicious like snow-white-cotton. He who describes their life-stories become virtuous and full of merits. Those who put a lid on the faults of others and are merciful even at great pains to themselves are adorable and their glory spreads far and wide in the world.

Devotees always entertain feelings of serving the saints and saints’ way of getting the work done are indeed wonderful. In reality, inspiration comes from the saints, and devotees are merely their instruments of accomplishing the work. For example, in 1700 Saka Sambat Poet Mahipati got the inspiration to write about the life of saints, God instilled the inspiration in the saints, and the work was accomplished. Likewise, in Saka Sambat 1800 Dasganu Maharaj’s service was accepted.

Mahipati composed four epics – Bhaktvijai, Santvijai, Bhaktlilamirita, Santlilamrita, Dasganu Mahraj composed only two – Bhaktlilamirta and Santlilamirta in which the life of some modern saints has been described. In chapter 31, 32 and 33 of Bhaktlilamirta and 57th. chapter of Santkathamrita nectar-like life of Sai Baba and his precious teachings have been described in the most beautiful and interesting way, which have been extensively quoted, in the 11, 12 and 17 issues of Sai Leela magazine. Readers perusal of theses books is earnestly urged. Likewise, description of wonderful Sai divine – sports is also given in another enhanting small book – “Sai Nath Bhajanamirtha” written by Mrs. Savitri Bai Raghunath Tendulkar of Bandra, Mumbai.
Dasganu Mahraj composed several sweet poems on Sai Babab. Another devotee Amidas Bhavani Mehta has published stories of Sai Baba in gujarathi language. Certain ‘Leelas’ of Sai Baba are published in Sai Prabha magazine too by Dakshina Bhiksha Sansthan of Shirdi. Now, the question arose, when such a vast literature is available, which throws light on the life of Sai Baba, then what necessity was of writing another book of Sri Sai Satcharita. The only answer to this is that the life of Sai Baba is like infinite ocean and if anyone dives deep into it then it is always easy to find pearls of wisdom (gyan) and devotion ( Bhakti), which shall be of immense benefit to the seeker.

The life of Sai Baba, his anecdotes and teachings are full of myriad great astonishments. The people afflicted with sufferings and misfortunes shall get happiness and peace in this world and merits in the other. If Sai Baba’s teachings, are contemplated upon with attention and sincerity, then devotees shall get the desired objective of their life and they shall easily attain indivisibility with od., in mind. I began to collect life stories of Sai Baba and I thought to myself that this is the best way of my spiritual practice ( Sadhana) available to me. This life-story of Sai Baba will prove to be of immense joy to those simple minded people who feel deprived of Sai Baba’s personal encountenance (darshan). I thought that now my job became rather easy and Baba shall make me happy in this life and in the other hereafter.

I myself could not gather courage to ask for permission of Sai Baba to write the book. Thereafter, I requested one of the devotees of his inner circle Madhavaro alias Shama for this purpose. Accordingly, he prayed Sai Baba with utmost humility thus: “This Anna Saheb is very curious to write your life-story; but please, for heaven’s sake, do not say like this that I am only a faqir and what is there any need to write my life-story at all. It is only with your permission and grace that he will be able to write the book; or may be it is the good merit of bowing at your holy feet that this work may be accomplished. Without your permission and blessing indeed nothing can be accomplished.”

Listening to this, Baba became very merciful and assured me by putting his hand on my head, and gave me ‘UDI’. He began to say, “let him go on collecting my stories and anecdotes. I will help him in doing so. I will myself fulfill desires of my devotees by writing my own autobiography. But he will have to give-up his ego and seek refuge in Me”.

The one who lives his life like this him I help the most. To write my life-story is simple and easy. I even help him variously when he remains at home. When his ego shall be totally annihilated, and there remains no trace of it to be found even by searching for it, I shall then be revealed in his inner-most-self and write my own autobiography and merely by listening to which shall be enkindled faith in the heart of devotees and they shall attain self-realization and bliss. While writing the book no attempt must be made to propound one’s views strongly and refute those of others and not get involved in vain controversies in favour or against any position on spiritual matters.

Bestowing Prophetic title of ‘Hemadpant’

Shri Kaka Saheb Dikshit and Nana Saheb Chandrokar were among by blossom friends. They had entreated me to go for Sai Baba’s darshan at Shirdi. I had even promised them to do so and go there with them. But due to some emergency and obstacle, I could not do so. The son of a close friend of mine fell ill in Lonawala and they tried all possible supernatural and spiritual means to get him cured; but no avail. At last they asked their preceptor to sit by the side of his head for a cure, but the result was the same as before. Looking at this event for their desperation, a thought came to my mind. When a preceptor is unable to save the life of the child of his disciple, then what is the benefit of having him at all? What avail is it to go to Shirdi for me indeed? I was assailed by such thoughts and thinking thus I postponed my journey to Shirdi. But there is a saying that whatever is to happen, does happen.

The officer of the area ( Mamaltar) Nana sahib Chandrokar was going on a tour of Basai. He reached Dadar from Thane and was waiting for the train going to Basai. At this time there arrived Bandra local train and travelling by it he reached Bandra and reprimanded me for postponing my journey to Shirdi. The reasoning of Nana Saheb appealed to me, and therefore, by preparing my bag and baggage I set-forth to Shirdi the same night. By reaching Dadar, I planned to take straight train for Manmad. According to this preplan, I enetered the compartment of the train going to Dadar. As soon as the train was to leave, a muslim entered my compartmentand on seeing my baggage he began to ask me where I was going to. I told him my plan. Then he told me that I should go straight to Borbhandar for getting the Manmad train. If this simple incident had not happened, my reaching Shirdi the next day as per my planwould not have been possible and I would have been assailed by many doubts and misgivings. But that was not to happen, and luck favored me. I reached Shirdi the next day before 9-10 o’clock.
This incident took place in 1890 when Sathe wada was the only place for the incoming devotees to stay. I was very desirous to have Sai Baba’s darshan as soon as I got down from the carriage there.

At that moment, the pearl among devotees Tatya Saheb Noolkar returned from the Mosque, and he told me that Sai Baba was at the turning of the Mosque at that time and told me to have his ‘darshan’ now, and thereafter go for meeting him later after taking bath etc. Hearing this I ran and prostrated at the Lotus feet of Sai Bai. My happiness knew no bounds then. What did I not gain at that moment? My body was thrilled and I lost my thirst and hunger. Ever since I touched his feet, there emerged a new wave of bliss inside me and my life was changed. I became indebted to him forever; I shall never be able to forget this benevolence of his in my life. I always salute him in my mind by remembering him, as I experienced, it is the special feature of Sai’s ‘darshan’ that change of thoughts and rooting out past birth’s actions indeed takes place yielding place to ‘vairagya’ in life. It is possible to have such ‘darshan’ only due to the accumulated merits of the past births.

Heated Discussion

On the very first day of my arrival at Shirdi a heated discussion took place between me and Bala Saheb. My view was that when one has to undergo effects of one’s own actions, then why is there need for Guru? Everyone must move forward by his own best efforts. What indeed does a Guru do for his disciple? He enjoys his sleep happily. Thus I advocated the side of freedom and Bala Saheb advocated the side of destiny. He reiterated that what is destined is bound to happen. In that, even the great man of the highest order failed as the proverb goes: “Man proposes and God disposes”. Advising me and he spoke thus: “Dear brother! Give up your mere intellectualism. Your ego shall be of no avail of you.” Thus about an hour was over in our propounding and demolishing one-another’s position and, as it is usually the case, there was no conclusion arrived at. On being thus tired of futile argumentation we had to put the discussion off.

The result was that I lost the peace of my mind and it appeared to me that so long as there is the wordly intellect and ego, there can never be possibility of avoiding a controversy, and if the same is uprooted, no controversy can take place on spiritual matters or otherwise. Indeed the sense of ego and self-superiority is the root cause of any controversy.

When along with other people, I reached the Mosque, then addressing to Kaka Saheb Baba asked: “What was going on in the Wada? What was the topic of discussion?”. Then by looking at me, he asked what this “Hemadpant” was saying? I was greatly astonished to hear all this. There was great deal of distance between Sathe Wada and the Mosque. Without being omniscient and omnipresent how could Baba have come to know of the discussion.

I began to think why Baba addressed me by the name of “Hemadpant” who was the well known minister of the king of Yadav Dynasty Mahadev of devgiri. He was a great intellectual of fine disposition and all round knowledge and well-versed in spiritual matters. He was the writer of excellect postry like ‘Rajprashashti’. He alone invented the new system of book-keeping and accountancy. Contrary to this, where I was an ignorant fool and idiot. Therefore, I could not understand what was the object of bestowing this title upon me?

At last, I reached the conclusion that Baba might have used this weapon to destroy my egoism so that I might become ego-less for all times to come or else it might be praising me for my sharpness of intellect and wit. When I dwelt upon the future, it became clear to me how meaningful it was for Baba to bestow upon me the title of ‘Hemadpant’. It is well-known, that in due course of time how intelligently and efficiently Dabholkar did the management of Sri Sai baba Sansthan and how well he maintained the accounts. At the same time, he composed the epic of Sri Sai Satchartita. In this treatise are included important spiritual gems of Gyan, Vairagya, Bhakti (Wisdom, detachment, devotion), surrender and self dedication.

Necessity of having a Guru

What views did Baba express on this sublime subject indeed there is no recod of any material or memos available that might have been written by ‘Hemadpant’. But Ka Saheb Dikshit has published his memo on this subject. The next day after ‘Hemadpant’ had gone to see Baba, kaka Saheb (on reaching the Mosque) asked permission to return home from Baba, which was granted.

Someone asked: “baba, where to go.”
Reply received: “Go high up”.
Question: “How is the Path?”
Baba: “There are many paths for reaching there. One path also goes from here. But this path is very difficult and there are tigers and wolves too in the jungle on the path.
Kaka Saheb: “What, if we take a guide with us?”
Baba: “Then there will be no difficulty. The guide shall take you straight to your destination by protecting from tigers and wolves, avoiding the pitfalls on the path. But in his absence there is possibility of getting astray or falling in the pits and alleys”. Dabhokar too was present at this occasion.

He thought that whatever Baba said was the answer to the question: “Why is there a necessity to have a Guru?” He firmly resolved once for ever that he will never be involved in any controversy how a free-man or a bounded-man fared in matters of spiritual concern. Contrarily, the real spiritual benefit lies in conforming to one’s Guru teachings.

Sai Nav (9) Guruwar Vratham

Om Sai ram
Read this story and do this Sai vrat with full faith for 9 Thursdays and have patience.
Prosperity, happiness and peace will surely spread in your home.

Sai Vrat Story
Kokilaben and her husband Maheshbai used to live in a big city and they had lots of love for each other. But Maheshbai’s nature was very annoying and he had no sense of talking. Neighbors’ were also very much frustrated by his kind of nature. Kokilaben had lots of faith in God and she was very religious. She was tolerating all her problems silently having lots of faith in God that God will make everything alright one day. But because of Maheshbai’s nature, their business went down gradually and there was not enough income. He started staying at home all day his nature becoming worst.

It was an afternoon one old saint came to Kokilaben’s door. There was enormous light on his face. And he asked for rice and dal(lentils). Kokilaben gave him rice and dal and she folded her hands and said Namaste ( greetings). Saint replied “ SAI WILL ALWAYS KEEP YOU HAPPY”, Kokilaben said, “There is no happiness in my life” and she told all her problems to the saint.

After listening to all her problems, Saint told her about “SAI NAV (NINE) GURUWAR (THURSDAY) VRAT”.

Saint told as follows about the vrat

  1. This vrat can be started from any Thursday by uttering “SAI BABA’s”name.
  2. This vrat has to be continued for 9 Thursdays.
  3. Any male, female or child can do this vrat.
  4. On these 9 Thursdays, individual who is doing vrat can eat fruit/milk/sweets, etc., all day long or can have one meal a day. One must not do this vrat without eating anything.
  5. If possible, go to ‘SAI BABA’ temple to have ‘SAI BABA’S ‘ darshan on these 9 thursadays.
  6. At home, do pooja/prayer of ‘SAI BABA’ as follows:
  7. In the morning or in the evening, do the pooja as mentioned below:
    • Put yellow cloth in front of you and place, “SAI BABA’s” photo or statue on this cloth.
    • Light lamp (diya) in front of BABA’s picture.
    • Wash or wipe BABA’s picture with clean water and cloth.
    • Put tikka (bindi on the forehead) with “kumkum”(red powder) on BABA’s face.
    • Offer yellow flower to BABA.
    • Offer fruits or sweets to BABA as naivedya (Prasad).
    • Read this SAI story and read/sing “SAI BABA’s” arti after finishing pooja and reading story.
    • Tell BABA why you are doing this vrat and ask him to fulfill your wish.

    • Put this SAI VRAT story book or printed paper which you are going to distribute among people, when you do pooja and give them to people. By doing this, their wishes will be fulfilled very soon too.
    • All wishes will be fulfilled by doing this vrat.
In this kali age (Kaliyug), ths vrat is very effective. This vrat will give desired fruit to doer, but doer must have full faith and patience. Whoever will distribute this “SAI VRAT” book among people and make good the name of SAI and this vrat, then all their wishes will be fulfilled.

After listening about this SAI vrat from saint, Kokilaben also decided to do this vrat. She started vrat from the Thursday. And she finished 8 GURUWARS (Thursdays) with full faith. On the 9th GURUWAR, she fed poor people and distributed SAI vrat books among friends and relatives.

As soon as she finished the vrat, all the quarrels vanished from her house, prosperity , happiness and peace spread in her home. Maheshbai’s nature was changed completely. Their business started doing well in a short time and started seeing prosperity. Both husband and wife started living happily. One day, Kokilaben’s sister-in-law and her brother came from Surat. Her sister-in-law was talking with Kokilaben. The former said that her kids were not studying and getting failed in exams. Kokilaben told her about “SAI VRAT”. She said, SAI devotion will make education better. Have full faith in “SAI BABA”. He helps everyone. Kokilaben’s sister-in-law asked the details of the vrat.

Kokilaben told about the ‘SAI VRAT’ in detail. And explaned her everything about the vrat. Her sister-law went to Surat and she sent a letter after few days. She wrote that her children have started doing ‘SAI VRAT’ and now they are studying very well. She also did vrat and distributed “SAI VRAT” book in her office. One of her friends, who had a very hard time in getting married, got married to a very nice man after started doing “SAI VRAT” and she got her stolen jeweler box back. It was a great miracle.
Hey “SAI BABA’, as you have blessed these people, please bless all others too.
